I've now cleaned up and moved that folder to a bigger drive. I'm watching its contents and I can see that as files get copied to Box they appear in the temp folder and generally disappear as soon as the copy finishes but some of them get left behind. I suspect that the best thing to do would be to have a scheduled task that deletes anything from that folder older than say 24 hours.
