Yet the Font formatting dialog box continues to - and always has - show 'Asian text font' as the dominant font choice. Yes, when I wrote point 1 I was referring to the preferences dialog indicated in bold in the paragraph above the list. At that time I had not seen your message containing the screen shot of that dialog but it further supports my point.
The East Asian Languages pane is a standard dialog in Microsoft Word preferences, but the Japanese Find preferences pane is enabled only when Japanese is selected in the East Asian preferences. Perhaps you've never selected Japanese in the East Asian Languages preferences but apparently the support for it has been triggered - maybe by an add-in. If you aren't sure off-hand, log out then hold Shift while you log in. Launch Word to see whether the Format Font dialog has been adjusted.

The idea of being able to upgrade you license makes sense. However when I started the process, I found that Microsoft doesn't sell keys for Windows 7 anymore.
I certainly didn't want to update my entire OS to Windows 8. The only option I had was to find a vendor that still had Windows 7 Pro licenses in-stock. Resolved my issue. Clear instructions.
